In the Order of Who?
Hebrews says that Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. The name seems important, yet somehow it never caught on as well as Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. The name first appears in Genesis 14, when Abraham gives this mystery man a tenth of what was left after a battle. He is introduced as the King of Salem, or it could be translated as the King of Peace. In addition, the name Melchizedek is easily translated to King of Righteousness, and he is also a priest of the Most High God.
The kind of King that Jesus follows in the footsteps of is one that rules with peace and righteousness instead of violent power, strength, manipulation, or selfishness. Jesus is not just a king, but also a priest; meaning that he does not simply rule over humanity, he is actively creating atonement and mediating between God and all of us. Lastly, the author of this letter to the Hebrews wants us to know that Melchizedek was good at all this, but Jesus is great at it.
May you know that the way of Jesus is the way Peace and Righteousness.
May you know that Jesus can mend your relationship with God no matter what.
And may you be covered in Christ’s sacrificial love.
