According to Greely’s “Ceremonies of the Eucharist” Acolytes first appear in history as assistants to the deacon in their regular duties of distributing alms, visiting shut ins and prisoners and ministering to those in need. Historically it was a ministry limited to adults.
Today in contrast, it is largely a ministry of adolescents and children.
We are overjoyed at St Timothy to have very dedicated and committed young people serving at our liturgies as acolytes. Liturgically acolytes carry the processional cross, hold the altar book, may process with the gospel book, assists at the cruet table and may at times process with lit candles or torches. The ministry they provide is an important one in our worship here at St Tim’s.
