Shoes for Belize

St. Timothy's has embarked on a mission to help impoverished school children in Belize. Recently, we were honored with visitors from this beautiful country including the Bishop of Belize, The Rt. Rev. Phillip S. Wright.

The Rt. Revd. Philip S. Wright

The Diocese of Ohio enjoys a Companion Diocese relationship with the Anglican Church of Belize.  St. Tim’s was blessed to welcome the Bishop of Belize and two Belizean lay women to our Clothesline ministry—where they were “wowed” by Hope Jarvis and her amazing crew.  Ensuing conversations revealed that the 5,000 children in the poverty-wracked Diocese’s schools are in  desperate need of shoes “good school-type shoes – used or new –  black, closed in rather than open toes, flat heel, boys and girls, preferably leather.  These are school uniform shoes.  Also, [rain boots].

When we learned that our bishop had scheduled St. Tim’s Celebration of New Ministry with her new rector for the Eve of St. Nicholas Day, a perfect opportunity was revealed: From Fr. Jeff’s German-American childhood came knowledge of the custom of setting shoes outside the bedroom door on St. Nicholas Eve in hopes that St. Nick would fill them with candy, coins or small gifts.  The occasion and the need provided opportunity for the Holy Spirit to bring together a very localized and precious parochial celebration with the opportunity to transcend our boundaries (and even our nation) to address a very specific need of a distant member of the Body of  Christ – the children of the Church of Belize.

Please join us on December 5th — and bring along a pair of shoes meeting the description above, or consider making a monetary gift to St. Timothy’s, noting “Shoes for Belize”.  At the appointed time, you'll join a procession to the altar to lay your gift before Jesus’ table.  Who knows, maybe Jesus’ eyes will twinkle even brighter than St. Nick’s that night!  Can’t make the Thursday evening service?  Bring your gift of shoes to the Narthex gathering place on Dec. 1st or 8th.

St. Timothy's Episcopal Church is registered through IRC section 501 (c)(3) as a non-profit church. and your contribution is tax deductable.
