Purpose of Vestry

According to our national canons, “the Vestry shall be agents and legal representatives for the Parish in all matters concerning its corporate property and the relations of the Parish to it Clergy.” Title I, Canon 14, Sec. 2.

According to our diocesan canons, “it shall be the duty of the Vestry to take charge of the property of the Parish and its business interest except those reserved to the Rector. It shall also be the duty of the Vestry to provide said Rector with compensation consistent with the provisions of the Canon ‘Of Minimum Clergy Compensation,’ to pay all lawful assessments on the parish, to keep order in the Church during Divine Service, and in general, to assist in the furtherance of the Gospel and the well-being of the Parish.” Title II, Canon 1, Sec. 9 (b).

In the case of the death or resignation of the Rector, it is the Vestry which elects a priest to succeed him or her, subject to the Bishop’s approval. Title II, Canon 1, Sec. 8 (a).

It is the Vestry which elects the parish’s Senior Warden and Junior Warden from its own number and Treasurer and parish Clerk from among the qualified electors of the Parish. Title II, Canon 1, Sec. 8(b) and 11 (b).

The Rector presides at all meetings of the Vestry as well as at the Annual and Special Meetings of the Parish. Title II, Canon 1, Sec. 4(b) and Sec. 6 ,( c ).

It is also important to note that he Parish holds title to its real and other property in trust for the Diocese.

St. Timothy’s Vestry
St. Timothy’s Vestry consists of 16 members: 15 serving three year terms, and one (a youth) serving a one year term.

Each person serving a three year term serves on one of the following standing committees:

· Executive
· Property
· Thanks+Giving
· Outreach
· Fellowship

Another standing committee, the Nominating Committee, is composed of the Junior Warden and those expected to chair the latter four committees following the Annual Meeting, plus the Rector.

The Nomination Committee’s nominees do not simply stand for election to the Vestry: each was selected to serve specifically on one of the five standing committees of Vestry. Each Vestry member will chair his or her committee during one of his or her three years. The chairs are called Advocates.

The Nominating Committee nominates only one person for each vacancy occurring on the Vestry. Qualified electors at the Annual Meeting may nominate from the floor any other qualified elector to run against the nominees above. Please secure your nominee’s committee interest before the meeting.
